How is SPI esitmated and priced?
Spray Foam Insulation is priced by the nominal thickness and total volume of the of the final installed foam.
While SPI cannot be installed to exacting dimensions because of the exspansive process of the foam, an experienced installer will be able to install the correct average thickness with little variation. The tendency is to err on the side of more than the thickness specified.
In practice, the volume of the SPI is the thickness of the foam in inches multiplied by the area of application. For example, if the area of a wall is 10' x 10' or 100 square feet and the thickness of the application is 3.5 inches, the total is 350 board feet of application.
Depending upon the type of foam, this application of 3.5 inches can result in an aged insulation value of R-21. Because building codes now require 6 inch walls, R values of up to R-30 can be realistically specified with SPI.
SPI products are priced according to result they produce. You get what you pay for. Additionally, SPI components are subject to some fluctuation in their wholesale price.
